“The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline.” – Bum Philips

People admire our favorite athletes and or favorite person in the world for their great talent and skills, but what is not really been shown is the self-discipline it took to become a great athlete or person they are.  There is no secret to self-discipline, we all have it in us.  Self- discipline helps to stay focused on our goals. It empowers you to control your distractions and reactions to any situation you may endure.  It helps you factor out your goal compared to a temporary fix.  The more we train our self-discipline, the stronger we become; just like a muscle.  Let’s explore some steps to help you reach your goal!

Know your weakness. When setting a goal, there is no doubt you will face temptation.  We have all heard the saying, “out of sight, out of mind.”  Let’s apply this saying to your daily life. Start removing anything that might prevent you from not reaching your goal.  If you have a goal to eat healthier, start cleaning the fridge and throwing out all the junk food.  Make a grocery list and stick to it; meal prep your meals for the week to keep you accountable.  This is just one example, but whatever goal you have set for yourself, acknowledge the distraction and remove it.

Fuel your body.  Our bodies are pretty amazing, to be honest.  How can we not take care of the one thing that will carry us to achieving our goal? when the starvation happens, we go into a low blood sugar phase.  Most of us like to call this “Hangry.”  This phase can and will impair your ability to focus on the task at hand.  It can make people irritable, possibly having people cave into your temptations. Understand the amount of hard work, and sacrifices to get to today.  Why would you want to go back to old habits?  Well, let’s set you up for success so you can stay on track.  Snacks are your friend! Yup, personally love Larabars, or RX bars, but you can pick any snack of your choice.  The goal is to keep your body fueled so you can reach that goal you dreamed of.

Get comfortable being unconformable.  Creating good habit is very tough, however creating by habits can become second nature; build more good habitas and conquer your bad habits. My coach always told me, “creature of habit get shaken easily.”  Never knew what that meant, but I know now.  As humans we hate change, some will not admit it and its okay.  We will admit it for you.  Change is scary, and can be overwhelming, but this is where you will see progress and evolve as person.  After all, isn’t that the purpose of setting a goal, to get you out of your comfort zone?  Your mind will fight you, try to combat this change because you will doubt yourself, and it will feel awkward, but you just need to stay focused, and keep moving forward.  All these emotions are completely normal when exiting the comfort zone. You’re doing great!

Allow wiggle room.  Goals are fun, exciting, scary and overwhelming all at the same time. It is like a walk in the park, Jurassic Park. (Laugh out loud!)  Be realistic with your goals.  Many fail because they do not allow room for failure.  For example, if people want to lose weight, there is no need to go on a strict diet.  Many who go on strict diets, fail within the first five days by binge eating their favorite food.  Be honest and true to yourself, and set weekly, or daily goals to treat yourself.  Self-discipline is hard, but you are much stronger.

Setback for a major comeback.  There is no doubt you will face setbacks, but that does not mean you can give up. This means tomorrow is a new day.  Learn from it and keep moving forward.  Even the greatest people on planet Earth have faced setback.  The world does not owe people any explanation or hand outs. Once people understand that obstacles will come, wanting to better ones self will happen, and setting new goals certainly occur. As long as people stay discipline, take steps towards improvement, and control their desires. The world then becomes limitless with new begins that shall come. .
